Precise measurement for improved assessment
Mechanical caliper-based geometry tools are used as line proving tools before utilizing further inspection technologies to detect, identify and size deformations. However, the circumferential resolution of these tools depends on two aspects: (a) the number of sensors and (b) the separation between them.
Post-inspection assessment of deformations such as strain, fatigue life or finite element modeling requires the most detailed, accurate and high-resolution pipeline inspection data available.
The mechanical arm arrangement of conventional geometry tools is susceptible to lift-off, leading to misinterpretation of actual depth and especially the shape of the deformation. Further calculations depend on the outside diameter and wall thickness of the pipeline.
For pipeline geometry measurement, NDT Global has developed inspection robotic tools with a validated, reliable and robust technology. These robots are based on the ultrasonic measurement principle, with inherent advantages such as bidirectional capabilities and wall thickness data acquisition in a single pass.
Since the first successful commercial inspection in March 2016, NDT Global's Ultrasonic Geometry Inspection robotic tools have successfully conducted inspections totalling more than 3,790 km (2,355 miles) worldwide, achieving a 100% first run success rate.

Our presenters will explore the advantages and reliability of ultrasonic technology for geometry measurement and demonstrate the (1) detection, identification and sizing and (2) geometric mapping capabilities. Data and results presented are compared to conventional caliper tools and in-the-ditch readings.

Dr Henrik Witte is a developer of sensor technologies at NDT Global since 2014. As a physicist in an interdisciplinary team, he decisively drives the development of the ultrasonic geometry ILI robotic tool fleet. He has profound experience in ultrasonic sound propagation as well as in signal and data processing.
Henrik Witte holds a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in physics from Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU), Germany. Before joining NDT Global, he worked in post doc positon at WWU in the field of "Dynamics at interfaces" using ultrafast laser systems as well as time-resolved X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
