Achieve up to 25% more Ammonia output by combining the SK-501 Flex with a plant upgrade

Within a 5 year horizon it is projected that 13% more urea capacity will come on-stream. These plants will feature the most energy efficient process layouts available and will therefore have a competitive edge compared to existing facilities. At the same time there is abundant urea supply in the global market, which increases the pressure on producers globally and the ammonia prices are expected to remain at a relatively low level compared to the last couple of years.

To survive in this competitive market new solutions are needed. The bottleneck in the syngas production is often the steam-to-carbon ratio (S/C) caused by the current Fe-Cr catalyst in the high temperature shift. The Al-Zn based SK-501 Flex allows producers to operate at a significantly lower S/C ratio resulting in less fuel consumption, higher production rates, less by-products and at the same time improving workers safety.

If the SK-501 Flex is combined with revamp options, it is possible to boost output of an existing plant by up to 25% with a typical payback time of 2-3 years and in the best cases down to 1 year. It is also possible to make the plant more flexible by using cheaper or more available fuels for steam production giving a further competitive advantage.

Principal Engineer

Ameet Kakoti was born in India in 1984. He earned his chemical engineering degree in India and worked for a couple of years commissioning various units at an Indian refinery.

Since 2008 he has been with Haldor Topsoe working across different technologies both in Technology Division as well as in the Chemical Business Unit. He has a vast experience in projects covering start-ups, basic engineering, troubleshooting and technical proposals.
