Days old: 2193

Time: 3PM London/10AM New York

Advanced analytical techniques can provide timely insights into a product’s stability, performance, and composition. In this webinar, experts will share the applications of analytical techniques to help answer various questions during the product development process. The emphasis will be on:

• Raman Spectroscopy - A powerful technique that can be used for polymorph identification, analysis of API form within formulations, and polymorph discrimination within a mixture. The practical applications of Raman spectroscopy and microscopy will be discussed, including examples of using the technique to understand why products fail quality control tests and determine optimal drug loading in solid dispersions.

• Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS) - Powerful techniques for the characterization and quantification of compounds. Their applications include the ability to confirm the structure of the compounds, determine purity, and identify (and possibly quantify) process-related impurities/degradants. Together, NMR and MS analysis can provide a definitive answer to the composition of your final drug product.

Presented by

Jason Garfitt, PhD,

Principal Scientist, Consultancy and Preformulation, Oral Drug Delivery

After receiving his master’s Degree in Nanoscience and Applied Nanotechnology at the University of Nottingham, Dr. Jason Garfitt completed his PhD on a joint project between schools of Chemistry and Physics examining molecular self-assembly in two-dimensional organic crystals. This multidisciplinary approach utilized scanning probe microscopies and vibrational spectroscopy amongst a wide variety of techniques. Dr. Garfitt joined Juniper Pharma Services in 2014, now Catalent Pharma Solutions, to support microscopy and spectroscopy activities within the characterization team. His focus is in Raman spectroscopy with 10 years of experience. He has also been involved with testing for patent litigation projects including witnessed notices of experiments.

Joshua Hicks, PhD,

Senior Scientist, Organic Spectroscopy, Oral Drug Delivery

Joshua Hicks completed his PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics at Oregon State University. His degree largely focused on studying protein structure, function, and ligand binding by NMR. After a short postdoc at Stockholm University, Joshua spent 5 years in Business Development as the lead scientist developing new applications for NMR in metabolomics, structure elucidation, reaction monitoring, and protein/ligand screening. Joshua spent another 5 years working as a research scientist working for a pharmaceutical company on structure elucidation and protein-ligand screening for new target entities. In 2015, Joshua joined Catalent as part of the Organic Spectroscopy group and has focused on the areas of associated with characterization of compounds such as purity, identity, limits testing, and identification of impurities.
