With the boom of digital and remote healthcare, and increasing life expectancy of people, there is a rapidly growing need for more and more advanced medical devices, both implanted and external. Picosun’s Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) thin film coating technology offers a disruptive solution for implant manufacturers. Hermetic ALD encapsulation improves the reliability, functionality, and the lifetime of electronic and orthopedic implants, potentially reducing the need for corrective or replacement surgeries. Also cost savings can be achieved when the base materials of the implant can be e.g. stainless steels instead of noble or specialty metals.
ALD was originally brought into large scale use by the semiconductor industry in early 2000’s. Today, things like computers, smartphones, 5G, IoT, industrial automation, self-driving cars, augmented or virtual reality would not be possible without ALD. ALD allows deposition of ultra-thin, highly uniform and conformal material layers of exact thickness and chemical composition on a variety of substrates. Nanometer-thin ALD films are dense, pinhole-free, practically massless and dimensionless, and they provide inert, hermetic encapsulation around the coated object, no matter its shape or dimensions.
Picosun’s ALD solutions have been in production use already for years at various medical industries in e.g. electronic implant protection, dental implant manufacturing, medical packaging, and coating drug particles for controlled drug release. Our various coatings have been tested and proven to be non-cytotoxic, biocompatible, and to have antibacterial or bioactive functions. One example of this are dental implants, where the coating enhances osseointegration process, thus making the healing time faster.
