Relationships and considerations of bead and pore structure, surface chemistries, and ligand design

Industry needs, patent expirations of ligand design and market dynamics have accelerated the development and availability of many protein affinity resins. Technology providers must consider a range of design parameters such as resin backbone, bead size, pore size, surface chemistry modification, ligand construct and how they relate to performance criteria such as DBC, life time, caustic stability, and column packing among others.

JSR’s approach to designing Amsphere A3™ affinity resin will be discussed. The balance between resin design and resin performance will be illustrated through a case study.

Business Unit Manager, Bioprocess

Guido Stroehlein is the Business Unit Manager for JSR Life Sciences in Europe. Prior to joining JSR, Guido played a pivot role in co-founding and serving as CEO of ChromaCon AG, a company that provides novel chromatography processes and equipment for biologics. He has advanced degrees from Technical University Hamburg and the ETH Zurich including an MBA and Ph.D. in Chemical and Bioengineering. Guido co-authored more than 30 peer reviewed publications and holds several patents in continuous chromatography.

Geert Lissens,

Geert Lissens, PhD, started his career as an Application Development Engineer at Merck Millipore. During a period of 4 years, he intensively supported Biotech companies by optimizing and sizing their downstream processes from small to manufacturing scale. Then he took a Sales position and developed Key Account customers for the Bioprocess Division of Merck Millipore. After 8 years, he started at the JSR Group (Tokyo, Japan) in the new strategic Life Science Business unit as Sales Manager for Europe.

His current main focus is to develop the market for JSR in Europe for innovative downstream processing technologies including a new JSR-made protein A sorbent (Amsphereâ„¢) and also to develop the business for partner company products including the innovative disposable chromatography products of Natrix Separations (Canada). Geert obtained his education as PhD in Chemical Technology at the Ghent University (Belgium) and graduated as a Bio-engineer at the KULeuven University (Belgium).
